"How Micro-Credentials Are Solving the Skills Gap Crisis"

Written by Lakshmy Iyer  (Manager Academic & Curriculum Management)

I recently attended the Applied Learning Conference (2–4 July 2025) at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), where industry leaders, educators, and policymakers converged to discuss the future of workforce readiness.

One resounding theme emerged: micro-credentials and bite-sized learning which are revolutionising post-secondary education. And institutions like Eduquest—a Recognised Training Provider (RTP)—hold the key to unlocking the potential for working professionals and job seekers.

1. Industry Insights from SIT: Why Micro-Credentials Matter

At the conference, experts emphasised that rapid technological shifts (AI, automation, green tech) demand agile skill-building.

Traditional degrees alone can’t keep pace.

As Dr. Tan Thiam Soon, President of SIT, noted: "Lifelong learning is no longer optional—it’s metabolic. Micro-credentials offer the 'oxygen' professionals need to thrive."

Key takeaways:

Skills Gap Crisis: 65% of Singaporean employers report talent shortages in tech and soft skills (2025 SkillsFuture data).

Applied Learning: Courses must blend theory with real-world practice—a core philosophy at RTPs like Eduquest.

Modularity: Working adults need "learning snacks," not feasts.

2. The Micro Credential Advantage: Quality Meets Flexibility

Microcredentials align with Industry standards, ensuring courses are:

Industry-Relevant: Designed with input from sectors like fintech, healthcare, and sustainability.

Stackable: Earn digital badges that build toward certifications or degrees.

Funded: Use SkillsFuture Credits (up to $1,000) or UTAP or other subsidies.

Case Study Shared at SIT: A mid-career engineer took an AI for Manufacturing micro-credential (40 hours). Within months, she automated workflows at her company, saving 200+ hours annually—and earned a promotion.

3. Benefits for Working Adults: Flexibility + Impact

Zero Career Disruption: Study evenings/weekends or via hybrid platforms.

Immediate ROI: Apply skills like data visualisation or agile leadership the next workday.

Future-Proofing: Pivot into high-growth areas (e.g., cybersecurity, ESG reporting) without quitting your job.

Conference Highlight: SIT showcased how bite-sized credentials increase learner retention by 70% vs. traditional courses.

4. Job Seekers: Stand Out in a Competitive Market

Targeted Upskill: Address resume gaps fast (e.g., 6-week Digital Marketing micro-credential).

Verifiable Credibility: Share recognised digital badges on LinkedIn.

Network Access: Connect with  peers from companies like DBS or GovTech.

Data Point: Job seekers with micro-credentials receive 40% more interview callbacks (Ministry of Manpower, 2024).

5. The Road Ahead: Insights from SIT’s ALC

The conference stressed three imperatives:

Personalisation: AI-driven learning paths

Employer Partnerships: RTPs must co-create courses with industry

Lifelong Portfolios: Micro-credentials will replace resumes by 2030.
